Hey guys,
do you know how much carbon dioxide you're producing every year?
It is 6.7 tones!!!!
Do you know Carbon dioxide is the major gas that cause global warming??
If we want to save our earth, we need to start our low carbon life.

Town Gas has launched an activities "Town Gas Low Carbon Action"

It held different kinds of activities to encourage us to live a low carbon life.

For example, it had some activities to promote low carbon cooking.
Also, it had some recipe for us to learn how to cook in a low carbon way.

Why don't you just have a look on this page and see how much you can do to help protecting our earth?
If we can decrease the concentration of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere,
global warming can be solved.
Every little step of ours, can help the earth survive!!

"Toilet 2.0" Project

During APPLE Steve Job is launching his new Operation System X Lion, the biggest competitor Mircosoft Bill Gates is seeking to change the lives of over 2.6 billion people in Africa, this time with a toilet concept – “Toilet 2.0.”

You know, UNICEF estimates that 1.1 billion people worldwide don't have access to any kind of toilet or ways of eliminating waste. That, in turn, fouls drinking wate and can cause diarrhea, which spreads quickly. Unfortunately, there are around 1.5 millions childrens die with there infections each year.

“‘Toilet 2.0’ – that’s right, innovations in sanitation have a big, positive impact for billions without access,” Gates said

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which works to help people lead healthy, productive lives, announced on Tuesday their initiative to help bring safe, clean sanitation services to millions of people in the developing world who don’t have access to safe, reliable toilets.

“No innovation in the past 200 years has done more to save lives and improve health than the sanitation revolution triggered by invention of the toilet,” Sylvia Matthews Burwell, president of the foundation’s Global Development Program, stated at a sanitation and hygiene conference in Africa.

Brave New Toilet?

Unfortunately, the tried-and-true water closet of developed countries like Africa is too wasteful for poorer regions with limited sources of water. The Gates Foundation's Water, Sanitation & Hygiene department is working on two alternatives.

One low-tech solution supports the building of pit latrines in toilet-free areas. A second project gives grants to scientists who come with creative ways to dispose of wastes.
Some clever ideas for the "ultimate toilet" include:
  • Create dry toilets that don't use water to flush, and which separate Number #2 from Number #1 to dry the solids
  • Using bacteria to turn waste into compost
  • Build toilets that turn urine into drinking water
  • Use human urine to make nitrogenous fertilizer in powder form
Let's see how The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation use the different social media to deliver this productive concept and lead a effective fund-rising campaign.

Bill Gates has turned his attention to a very unglamorous and taboo, but critical aspect of human life- the toilet and is looking to give it a much-needed technological uplift. Why not? When everything around us is becoming smarter and multi-functional, why not the toilet?

Turning Waste into GOLD!!!!!!

Have you ever imagined that you can make use of the waste to produce something?

The video demonstrated how five million units of electronic waste being disposed of annually is simultaneously giving away HK$600 million worth of precious metals if it was all recycled in a sustainable manner. The Environment Bureau should be blamed for losing hold of the responsibility of appropriate e-waste treatment, letting exporters do the dirty job, as well as the loss of huge potential business opportunities arising from extracting precious metals such as gold, silver, copper, all going down the drain for years!

Why not making use of the waste, and turn them to gold!

The leading recycler, Multiresource Technology Inc introduced their best practice of recycling electronic waste and the “turn waste to gold” facilities and processing lines. It was revealed that recycling 20,000 computer units can produce 1kg of gold, 1.5 kgs of pure silver and 3,500 kgs of copper. One kilogram of gold is worth HK$0.28 million at current market rates, and the value of gold alone that the company gained through recycling amounted to over HK$100 million a year, showing the value in electronic waste.

This maybe be time intensive, it is not an easy task to convince people to recycle their waste, especially computers. Computers are quite heavy and is difficult for people to carry their own computers to the recycle station for recycle. The benefits of social media may not work out when people do not have any interest in the product or service. In this case, it is not successful as most of the people tend not to care much about the waste, where will they go after throwing them away, or what will they be after the recycling process.

Have you heard Ken and Barbie was broken up?

This video shared by my friend today, I was shocked and found it interesting. Let’s have a look on this video.

Ken was interviewed by Greenpeace and learned that Barbie's scandalous deforestation habit. He cannot accept it and broke up with her. Ken also staged a protest at Mattel headquarters in USA to announce to public that they were over.

This video was created by Greenpeace. It is interesting, isn’t it? But it is not all about fun, but also deforestation. Greenpeace wants to tell Mattel, the manufacturer of Barbie, stop using paper packaging for wraping Barbie from Indonesia’s most notorious rainforest destroyer Asia Pulp and Paper (APP).

The rainforests in Indonesia are home to some of the last tiger, orabg-utans and elephants. APP destroyed the critical wildlife habitat and carbon-rich rainforests to make the throw away toy packaging. We do not have rights to destroy the rainforests because of the nice packaging.

I hope Mattel stops using APP. Otherwise Ken won’t forgive Barbie, as same as the customers and me!!!!

What's a creative ads come from our HK Government!

How many of you have seen this creative advertisment on TV??? If not, I strongly recommend you to spend few mintues to watch it, which is a creative and full of Hong Kong culture video. "Make the world, make a GREEN world".

You're not expected this advertisment is come from Environment Bureau!

Because of the video, it attracted me to visit their website:
Green_HK

Then I found more and more materials and information of the environment protection from Government. They have carried out a lot of internet advertising campaign. To reach out to a wider community, the TV announcements, radio announcements, ringtone and video have been added into their website for review, also an on-line computer game has been developed to encourage the public to think and act green in their daily lives. Click to the game page.

Improving our environment is not a job just for either the Government or green groups. It is a business for each and everyone of us. Action makes a difference. We all should take part to help make a change.  A better environment can be more attainable if it becomes a way of life.  We must start forming new habits.  A simple act in our daily living can help conserve energy and reduce waste production or generation.

Turn interest into business: DIY with natural and organic, does it work with social media?

Hey, I would like to share a blog with you.  The blogger share her daily life which all related to the environment issue.  She shares her farming life, studies of aroma therapy, ideas of environmental protection and her handmade DIY natural products.

I was surprised that she turn her interest into a real business!  She sells her harvests, DIY aroma skincare and natural food products in the blog.  The blogger linked up with the blog of her shop (Jovial DIY) with her personal blog.  假日農夫

The blogger make use of most of the social media channels to promote her business, for example blog, forum, flickr, YouTube, facebook, etc.  Customer can discuss with the shop owner and other customers in those channels for product information and ideas about GREEN, the shop want to build up relationship with their customer and spreading the ecofriendly message in these ways.
Jovial DIY encourage their customer to return or reuse the product container when they do repeat purchase.  Customer will be refunded for the empty bottles or discount offered on the product when they bring their own container for shopping.

Posted customer's comment in flickr
Products catalogue in Facebook of Jovial DIY
However, there are some cons for the shop using the social media to market their product.  Although the cost of advertising is low, for the small scale business like Jovial DIY is difficult to arouse awareness of the audience in certain level.  As not all people are interested in the green topic when they browse the social media channels, they wont particularly to search related topics in there, so they may not discover the shop and related information about the shop.  Consumer confidence is another problem for the shop, as this is a online shop, customer cannot touch the product, they may have query on the product quality, while other customers may left their negative comment in the social media channels, this will affect the customer attitude, belief and decision.
Handmade aroma soap, handmade jam, bread and cookies, food and skincare product.

Facebook is a really powerful platform for company or organization for promotion. World wild, there are over 1,000,000 join the Earth Hour fans page.  Also, WWF created different  Earth Hour page for citizen supporting their city.
I think most of us have already watched the official promotional video in Hong Kong version. Let's watch the other version which really funny!

Tough to be GREEN x PlaystationHK?

Today when I go to the youtube site, the No. 1 most top view video is a Hong Kong teenager Mr. Ming free talk show. The video title is directly say " Why people think it is so tough to be GREEN?"

Firstly I just think it is only a teenager upload his talk show to show off his talent. His puffy behaviour make a lots of people comments on that and draw the attention successfully.

53, 923 people LIKE the post from Youtube!! More than 300 comments about the video~
At the end, I found that...... he is promoting the competition hold by SONY computer entertainment HK Ltd. I'm sure this video is more aggressive and popular than only show a poster on facebook.

46, 831 people LIKE the post from facebook!!

Compare with two online marketing methods, both are using the internet platform to promote the same event, but youtube video is more easy to express their objective to their target audience.

If anyone are interested of this competition, please visit their website and join it, maybe you are the winner to win the PlayStation®3 console!!!!!

3R - REDUCE, REUSE & RECYCLE!!

RECYCLED CLOTHES

3R - REDUCE, REUSE & RECYCLE!!

Have you tried recycled clothes before? Recycled clothes are not second hand clothes, but clothes that are made of natural resources. I have found a quite interesting post from the Yahoo Blog, it is about using natural resources to produce clothes. Please take a look! The clothes are
nice, really suitable to wear during this hot summer! ^ ^

http://hk.myblog.yahoo.com/jw!Nf3L7cmLHx99XT9IrG0od_tOodE-/article?mid=3729

Being a more sustainable fashion company, H&M contributes a lot on providing fashion for conscious customers. One example of how they are doing this is by using natural resources in their collections. How about recycled materials? H & M introduced the H & M CONSCIOUS that are made from post-consumer or pre-consumer waste and help reduce water, energy and chemical usage.

The new message encourages customers to be more socially and environmentally conscious about their consumption choices and remain fashionable while doing so.

Using social media can arouse consumers interest and awareness, but since consumers cannot feel and touch the texture of the clothes, they may not make their decision to buy the products easily. Thus, for what the company can do is to convince the consumers, to attract them to come to the stores and have a look first. They need a lot of efforts to persuade the consumers.

China, please flight for the environment!

Nowadays, China is become stronger and stronger. She is rapidly developing in the industry and commence. However, the environmental development seemed to be left behind. The people in China may not have the awareness to protect the environment, they even destroy it. For example, illegal disposal of industrial waste. I think the reason behind is lack of civic education in environmental protection.

Therefore, some of the organizations started to arrange activities in order to encourage people to protect the environment and deliver message to the public. Let’s see the below video.

後舍男生最新視頻: 環保九宮格

後舍男生最新視頻: 大家一齊來環保

These two videos were uploaded to Tudou.com, the biggest video-sharing platform in China. Although most of the comments of the videos were not related to the environmental protection, it seemed have got some attention from the public because they have been viewed 59,000!

Actually, these two videos are advertising the competition, called Heart Head Hand (青國青城)”. The competition was organized by different environmental groups which allowed people to share their activities of how to protect the environment in daily life. The organizations have chosen the best activities as a winner. Here is their website: Heart Head Hand (青國青城)

I think the environment groups in China should hold more similar competitions and functions to encourage people to deliver the message to public and provide more civic education to the people.

One of the social media platforms is Weibo but it does not have much visits due to the infrequent update. It could be more effective if more platforms were included in the spread of information.
